How often should smoke detectors be replaced?
From NFPA 72. (National Fire Protection Association)
“10.4.7 Replacement of Smoke Alarms in One- and Two Family Dwellings. Unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer's published instructions, single- and multiple-stations smoke alarms installed in one- and two-family dwellings shall be replaced when they fail to respond to operability tests, but shall not remain in service longer than 10 years from the date of manufacture.”
Replace and upgrade your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms every ten years.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms must be replaced within the specified lifetime of the product, usually 5 to 10 years after the date of manufacture. Check the back of your alarm for the date of manufacturing. Aging smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms do not operate efficiently and often are the source for nuisance alarms.
The following should be the model numbers of the detectors. Please check that your detectors are the same numbers before ordering. These are available from ACE, Lowe’s and Home Depot.
